The Excellency of Knowledge: How Knowledge Shapes the Believer’s Mind.
To begin with, the Bible consistently highlights the value and necessity of knowledge. Proverbs 18:15 says, "The heart of the prudent getteth knowledge; and the ear of the wise seeketh knowledge." Here, knowledge is not presented as an option for the curious, but as a pursuit of the wise. It is the key to discernment, spiritual growth, and victorious living. The consequences of neglecting knowledge are sobering—“My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge…” (Hosea 4:6). This makes it clear: a lack of knowledge is not a harmless void—it is a destructive force. Therefore, the believer must be intentional about acquiring the knowledge that leads to life.
Building on this, knowledge becomes the primary instrument through which the believer’s mind is renewed. Romans 12:2 instructs us not to conform to this world but to be transformed by the renewing of our minds. How does this renewal take place? Through consistent exposure to the truth found in God’s Word. Knowledge reshapes perspectives, breaks down mental strongholds, and aligns thoughts with divine patterns. It replaces fear with faith, confusion with clarity, and emotional instability with inner peace. A renewed mind is a powerful mind—one that reflects the mind of Christ.
Furthermore, as knowledge renews the mind, it empowers discernment. Discernment is not merely a spiritual gift for a few, but a vital skill every believer must develop. According to Hebrews 5:14, “Strong meat belongs to those who are of full age, even those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil.” In a generation filled with spiritual deception and half-truths, discernment is the believer’s compass. It is knowledge, applied and tested, that sharpens the ability to distinguish truth from error, righteousness from compromise, and godliness from mere religious form.
In addition to discernment, knowledge is also the gateway to excellence. The story of Daniel and his friends in Babylon is a testament to this truth. Daniel 1:17 tells us, “As for these four children, God gave them knowledge and skill in all learning and wisdom…” That knowledge distinguished them and opened doors of influence in a foreign land. Similarly, knowledge will position the believer to stand out in a world of mediocrity. It promotes effectiveness, strategic thinking, and diligent stewardship of divine opportunities. Excellence is not birthed by prayer alone—it is sustained by knowledge.
All this said, true knowledge has only one sure foundation: the fear of the Lord. Proverbs 1:7 affirms, “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge…” This means that every pursuit of understanding must begin with reverence for God. Worldly knowledge may feed pride, but godly knowledge humbles and transforms. It is not for personal glory but for the glory of God and the good of others. Knowledge birthed from intimacy with God brings peace, direction, and purpose. It is not just learned—it is lived.
In conclusion, the excellency of knowledge lies in its power to shape the mind, refine the character, and equip the believer for every good work. It is more than an academic exercise—it is spiritual transformation. Jesus said, “You shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free” (John 8:32). That freedom begins in the mind. Let every believer, therefore, hunger for knowledge—not to impress the world, but to become all God has destined them to be.
